Mapping ice cliffs on debris-covered glaciers using multispectral satellite images

چکیده

Ice cliffs play a key role in the mass balance of debris-covered glaciers, but assessing their importance is limited by lack datasets on distribution and evolution at scales larger than an individual glacier. These are often derived using operator-biased time-consuming manual delineation approaches, despite recent emergence semi-automatic mapping methods. methods have used elevation or multispectral data, varying slope mixed spectral signal these dynamic features makes transferability approaches particularly challenging. We develop three semi-automated objective new based Spectral Curvature Linear Unmixing images, to map glacier regional scale. The each method assessed applying it sites Himalaya, where glaciers widespread, with lithologic, glaciological climatic settings, encompassing different periods melt season. keeping mind wide range remote sensing platforms currently use, focus particular two products: we apply site near-contemporaneous atmospherically-corrected Pléiades (2 m resolution) Sentinel-2 (10 images assess effects spatial resolution results. find that works best for high resolution, four band Pléaides while modification scaling factor unmixing coarser additional information products. Combining satellite multispectral image data and a digital elevation model for mapping debris-covered glaciers

Automated glacier mapping from satellite multispectral image data is hampered by debris cover on glacier surfaces. Supraglacial debris exhibits the same spectral properties as lateral and terminal moraines, fluvioglacial deposits, and bedrock outside the glacier margin, and is thus not detectable by means of multispectral classification alone. Based on the observation of low slope angles for de...

A physically based 3-Dmodel of ice cliff evolution over debris-covered glaciers

We use high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) surveys to document the evolution of four ice cliffs on the debris-covered tongue of Lirung Glacier, Nepal, over one ablation season. Observations show that out of four cliffs, three different patterns of evolution emerge: (i) reclining cliffs that flatten during the ablation season; (ii) stable cliffs tha...

Obliquity-paced climate change recorded in Antarctic debris-covered glaciers

The degree to which debris-covered glaciers record past environmental conditions is debated. Here we describe a novel palaeoclimate archive derived from the surface morphology and internal debris within cold-based debris-covered glaciers in Antarctica. Results show that subtle changes in mass balance impart major changes in the concentration of englacial debris and corresponding surface topogra...

Decision Tree and Texture Analysis for Mapping Debris-Covered Glaciers in the Kangchenjunga Area, Eastern Himalaya

In this study we use visible, short-wave infrared and thermal Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data validated with high-resolution Quickbird (QB) and Worldview2 (WV2) for mapping debris cover in the eastern Himalaya using two independent approaches: (a) a decision tree algorithm, and (b) texture analysis. The decision tree algorithm was based on multi-spect...
